Loneliness, Touch Hunger and the Power of Safe Contact for Older Adults

(A summary of research on social isolation, health risks and supportive touch) Estimated read time: ~3–4 minutes
A lot of older clients at The Massage Clinic aren’t just hurting physically; they’re lonely.
Partners have passed away, kids are busy, friends have moved or died, and casual touch has quietly disappeared from daily life. The research on social isolation and health—and the role safe touch can play—makes this a serious issue, not a soft one.
The Problem
Loneliness and isolation are major health risks in later life.
The National Institute on Aging reports that social isolation and loneliness in older adults are linked to higher risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease and even early death. Some analyses suggest that chronic loneliness can affect mortality risk on a scale similar to smoking or obesity.touch+1
At the same time, older adults often receive less safe, affectionate touch.
Vision, hearing and mobility changes can make socializing harder. Living alone or in institutional settings often means less everyday contact—no hugs, no casual shoulder squeezes.
While massage research in older adults is still emerging, studies that include this population suggest that regular, safe touch is associated with better emotional health and less limitation due to physical and emotional issues.semanticscholar+2
Brief summary of the research (and how we use it)
The NIA’s review on social isolation and loneliness summarizes multiple studies linking loneliness to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, depression, cognitive decline and mortality in older people. Separate work has found that socially isolated seniors report lower quality of life and higher anxiety and depression.nia.nih+1
The 2011 study on massage use in older adults showed that those who used massage reported better emotional health and less limitation from physical and emotional problems than non‑users, even after adjusting for age and comorbidities. While this doesn’t prove causation, it aligns with what smaller clinical studies and practitioner reports suggest: regular, consensual, caring touch can be emotionally stabilizing and help people feel more connected to themselves and others.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih+1
For us at The Massage Clinic, this means we see our work with older adults as both physical and relational.
We’re not a replacement for family, friends or community, but we are one place where safe, predictable touch is guaranteed for an hour. We take that seriously: clear boundaries, consent, predictable routines and room for conversation or quiet are all part of the structure. For you as an older client, it’s okay to name loneliness or “touch hunger” as one of the reasons you’re here.
A practical takeaway: if you’re feeling isolated, adding regular massage to your routine can be one part of a broader plan that might include social groups, movement classes, therapy or senior‑center programs.
At The Massage Clinic, we’re happy to be one stable source of safe contact in that mix, and we’re here to help if you need us.
