Massage Myths: Are Knots Even Real?

They usually come from clients who’ve been told that their pain is caused by literal lumps or “stuck fascia” that need to be smashed or melted by a very strong therapist. We’ve spent time in the current research on trigger points, myofascial pain and fascia, and we want to give you a more accurate (and still hopeful) explanation.

The Problem
When you say “knot,” you’re pointing at a real experience.
People with myofascial pain describe small, tender spots in muscle that are more sensitive than the surrounding area, sometimes within a taut band of tissue. A 2024 comprehensive review of trigger point theory describes these regions as complex areas of sensitized muscle and connective tissue influenced by mechanical load, local chemistry and nervous‑system factors—not simple, discrete lumps that can be crushed away. We take this seriously enough that we’ve dug into work from massage organizations, skeptical clinicians and physiology literature, and we want you to have the same clarity.
The Problem
In medicine, “detox” has a very specific meaning.
Your liver, kidneys, lungs and gut do the day‑to‑day detoxification work by processing and eliminating waste and foreign chemicals. Massage can influence local circulation and the lymphatic system, but there is no good evidence that it directly “detoxes” your organs or flushes unnamed toxins from your body.amtamassage+1
The lactic‑acid story also doesn’t hold up.
Older explanations claimed that lactic acid builds up in muscles and needs to be squeezed out by deep pressure. Exercise physiology shows that lactate produced during normal activity is cleared by your own metabolism within minutes to about an hour after exercise, without any help from massage.
